Ratio and Proportion aptitude questions
Ratio and Proportion questions are part of the Quant section of placement aptitude tests. Scale both parts with one multiplier before comparing ratios. Below are 5 worked examples with the answer and the working; practise ten fresh ones or take a timed mock when you are ready.
Example 1. Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 7 and their sum is 110. What is the larger number?
- A. 33
- B. 110
- C. 77 (answer)
- D. 66
Total parts = 3 + 7 = 10. One part = 110/10 = 11, so the larger number is 7 * 11 = 77.
Example 2. Rs 210 is divided between A and B in the ratio 2 : 5. How much does A get?
- A. Rs 60 (answer)
- B. Rs 210
- C. Rs 90
- D. Rs 150
Total parts = 2 + 5 = 7. One part = Rs 210/7 = Rs 30, so A gets 2 * Rs 30 = Rs 60.
Example 3. If 4 : 20 = 6 : x, what is x?
- A. 1.2
- B. 30 (answer)
- C. 26
- D. 120
In a proportion the product of the means equals the product of the extremes: 4 * x = 20 * 6, so x = 120/4 = 30.
Example 4. If 3 : 27 = 12 : x, what is x?
- A. 324
- B. 108 (answer)
- C. 39
- D. 1.3
In a proportion the product of the means equals the product of the extremes: 3 * x = 27 * 12, so x = 324/3 = 108.
Example 5. Rs 490 is divided between A and B in the ratio 2 : 5. How much does A get?
- A. Rs 210
- B. Rs 140 (answer)
- C. Rs 350
- D. Rs 490
Total parts = 2 + 5 = 7. One part = Rs 490/7 = Rs 70, so A gets 2 * Rs 70 = Rs 140.
