Averages aptitude questions
Averages questions are part of the Quant section of placement aptitude tests. Replace averages with totals so each new value changes the sum explicitly. Below are 5 worked examples with the answer and the working; practise ten fresh ones or take a timed mock when you are ready.
Example 1. The average score of 10 players is 49. One player with a score of 64 leaves the team. What is the average score of the remaining players?
- A. 64
- B. 54.4
- C. 49
- D. 47.3 (answer)
Old total = 10 * 49 = 490. Remaining total = 490 - 64 = 426 for 9 players. New average = 426/9 = 47.3.
Example 2. What is the average of 51, 57, 62, 46?
- A. 54 (answer)
- B. 170
- C. 63
- D. 49
Average = sum of the values / number of values = 170/4 = 54.
Example 3. The average age of 6 students is 37 years. A new student aged 42 years joins the group. What is the new average age?
- A. 42
- B. 37.7 (answer)
- C. 41.7
- D. 37
Old total = 6 * 37 = 222. New total = 222 + 42 = 264, and the group has 7 students. New average = 264/7 = 37.7 years.
Example 4. The average age of 5 students is 57 years. A new student aged 69 years joins the group. What is the new average age?
- A. 57
- B. 59 (answer)
- C. 65
- D. 69
Old total = 5 * 57 = 285. New total = 285 + 69 = 354, and the group has 6 students. New average = 354/6 = 59 years.
Example 5. What is the average of 71, 70, 61, 74?
- A. 75
- B. 69 (answer)
- C. 202
- D. 64
Average = sum of the values / number of values = 202/4 = 69.
